More Than a Wine Cellar Door: Custom Hinged Floor Systems
At Glass Floor Systems, our hinged glass floor hatches are perhaps best known as elegant wine cellar doors — but over the years, our commitment to bespoke design has taken us well beyond that application. From outdoor access solutions to genuinely unusual one-off projects, we've found that the versatility of a well-engineered hinged floor system is something many clients don't initially anticipate.
Here's a look at some of the ways our clients have integrated custom hinged floor systems into their homes and gardens. Each of these projects was individually assessed, designed, and built to meet its specific requirements — which is the only approach that makes sense when the brief is truly unique.

Outdoor Hinged Hatches: Designed for the Elements
Our hinged floor systems aren't limited to interior use. A growing number of clients require robust access solutions for outdoor spaces — whether for underground utilities, hidden storage, or garden features that benefit from discreet access from above.
For outdoor applications, we typically work with galvanised and powder-coated steel frames, which offer significantly better resistance to corrosion and weathering than untreated steel. The appropriate specification for any outdoor installation will depend on the specific environment, exposure conditions, and anticipated use, so we'd always discuss this in detail before finalising a design. If you're considering an outdoor hatch, early engagement with our team helps us recommend the most suitable approach for your conditions.
Tile and Decking Infill: When Glass Isn't the Point
While glass is our signature material, our hinged frame systems are designed to accommodate other infill options where that better suits the project. We've built units with provisions for clients to fit their own tiles, stone paving, or decking boards — creating access hatches that blend almost invisibly with the surrounding floor surface.
This approach is particularly popular for outdoor areas where a glass panel wouldn't be practical, or for indoor settings where the client wants access without a visible glass feature. The structural frame does the work; the surface finish is yours to choose. As with all our products, the feasibility of specific infill options depends on the weight, thickness, and fixing requirements of the chosen material, so it's worth discussing your preferred finish with us early in the design process.
Project Highlight: An Aquarium Access Hatch
One of the most unusual projects we've undertaken involved designing and manufacturing an electric hinged system for access over a large indoor fish tank. This was genuinely bespoke engineering — the brief required the actuators to be sunk directly into the aquatic environment, which is not something any standard product is designed to accommodate.
The solution involved custom waterproof enclosures for the electrical components, integrated throughout the unit to provide protection suitable for the aquatic environment. It goes without saying that a project of this nature required very careful engineering, close collaboration with the client, and thorough testing before sign-off. It's not a standard product, and we wouldn't suggest it could be replicated without a similar level of bespoke design work — but it demonstrates what's possible when a client comes to us with a genuinely unusual requirement and is willing to work through the design process properly.
The same client also commissioned several outdoor hatches adjacent to an external fish pond running beneath the house. These were infilled with the client's own decking boards, providing discreet access to pumps and maintenance equipment with no visible hatch from above.

What Makes a Project Like This Work
The common thread across all our more unusual projects is early, detailed conversation about the brief. The further a project departs from a standard application, the more important it is to involve us — and where relevant, structural engineers and other specialists — at the earliest possible stage.
We're honest with clients when something is genuinely difficult, or when a proposed approach carries risks that need to be carefully managed. That's how bespoke work should be done. If you have an unusual access requirement in mind, we'd rather hear about it early and help you think it through properly than be handed a specification that doesn't quite work.
