Not every well, light shaft or historic opening is a tidy rectangle. Many of the openings we are asked about are round brick wells discovered during renovation, oval shafts that have shifted over a century of settlement, or awkward irregular voids tucked into a courtyard corner. A square panel dropped over a circular well rarely looks right, and it often wastes the very thing that makes the feature interesting in the first place — the shape of the opening itself.
Custom-shaped glass well covers follow the outline of the opening rather than fight it — a true circle, a stretched oval, or a one-off profile templated from the existing brickwork. What follows is general background on how bespoke shapes are approached and where the practical considerations lie. Requirements vary considerably between projects, and the specification for any individual cover should always be determined by a qualified structural engineer working from the actual site conditions.

Why Openings So Rarely Come in Standard Shapes
Historic wells were dug and lined by hand, and the resulting shaft is almost never perfectly circular. Brick courses bow inward or outward, the coping stone may be worn unevenly, and centuries of ground movement can leave an opening that measures differently across every axis. The same applies to old cellar hatches, coal chutes and disused light shafts — they were built to a working purpose, not to a drawing.
Modern openings can be equally awkward. A cover may need to sit within an existing paving pattern, wrap around a downpipe or step, or fit between structural elements that cannot be moved — the opening is often defined by what the surrounding structure allows rather than by what is convenient to glaze.
Because of this, bespoke shapes usually begin with templating rather than measuring. A physical or digital template taken from the opening captures the real outline, including the irregularities a tape measure would smooth over. That template then informs both the glass profile and the supporting framework, so the finished glass well cover sits properly rather than approximately.
Circular and Oval Covers
Circular covers are the most frequently requested non-rectangular shape, largely because so many discovered wells are round. Visually they are hard to beat — a clean disc of glass sitting flush in stone, timber or paving, with the shaft visible below, tends to read as a deliberate architectural feature rather than a cover placed over a problem.
Structurally, curved edges behave differently from straight ones, and the support arrangement has to reflect that. Where a rectangular panel might be supported along opposing edges, a circular panel is generally supported continuously around its perimeter, which changes how loads are distributed into the surrounding structure. Structural engineers typically consider the span, the anticipated loading for the location, the substrate the frame is bearing onto, and whether the cover is fixed or needs to open.
Ovals and elliptical shapes bring their own considerations, since the load path is not symmetrical in the way a circle's is. The longer axis carries more span, and the design has to account for that difference rather than treating the shape as a slightly squashed circle. Glass thicknesses and laminate build-ups vary depending on the project and are determined by a structural engineer for each individual opening — there is no universal figure that applies across shapes and sizes.

Irregular and One-Off Profiles
Genuinely irregular shapes — a well that is neither round nor oval, an opening with a notch cut around a wall, a shaft that narrows partway along its length — are entirely workable, but they call for more discussion at the design stage. The key questions are usually about how the perimeter will be supported, whether the shape can be cut cleanly in toughened laminated glass, and how the cover will be handled during installation.
Curves and cut-outs in structural glass are formed before toughening, since the glass cannot be worked afterwards. That makes the template stage critical: whatever profile is agreed is the profile that gets made. It is one of the reasons bespoke projects tend to involve more back-and-forth up front than a straightforward rectangular panel, and why we generally encourage clients to talk through the shape early rather than late.
Segmented approaches are sometimes appropriate for larger openings where a single panel would be impractical to manufacture or lift into position. Whether that suits a project depends on the opening, the access route, and the visual effect the client is after. Access, Framing and Finish
A custom shape does not have to mean a fixed panel. Round and irregular covers can be made as hinged access hatches where the well below needs to be reached — for inspection, maintenance, a pump, or simply because the client wants the option. Hinging a non-rectangular panel takes some thought, as the hinge line and the swing arc both have to work with the shape, and any assistance mechanism is specified per project based on the size and weight of the panel rather than to a standard arrangement.
Framing choices matter more on bespoke shapes than on square ones. A frame that follows a curve is fabricated to match the template, and the visible reveal around the glass affects how the finished cover reads. Some clients want the frame as discreet as possible so the glass appears to sit directly in the surrounding floor; others prefer a defined metal edge that frames the opening deliberately. Both are achievable, and the decision is usually as much aesthetic as technical.
Surface finish is worth raising early too, particularly outdoors. Anti-slip treatments, obscured or clear glass and surface texture all change the appearance, and on a shaped panel the treatment has to be applied consistently across a non-standard outline. Where a bespoke cover forms part of a larger scheme it may sit alongside walk-on glass floor panels elsewhere in the same space, in which case matching the glass and finish across both is worth planning from the outset.

Practical Points Worth Raising Early
Access influences a surprising amount. A circular cover for a courtyard reached only through a house is a different proposition from one in an open garden, and the handling constraints can shape the design. Better to establish that at enquiry stage than on installation day.
Listed buildings and conservation areas add another layer. Where a historic well is part of what makes a property significant, the approach to covering it is generally required to comply with the relevant consents, and those should be confirmed with the local planning and conservation officers for the specific property.
Finally, drainage and ventilation of the void below are worth thinking about at design stage rather than afterwards. What is appropriate depends entirely on the well, the ground conditions and the intended use, and is one of the things our team will want to understand before discussing options for any particular opening.
