There is something quietly captivating about being able to look down through a floor and see what lies beneath. Safety, Structure and the Glass Itself

Panels used in structural floor and cover applications are generally made from toughened and laminated glass, chosen so that the assembly retains integrity even if a layer is damaged. The number of layers and the overall build-up are determined by a structural engineer based on the span, the expected loads and how the cover will be used – there is no single universal thickness, and figures quoted for one project should never be assumed to apply to another.

Loadings for floors and walkable covers are generally required to comply with the relevant Building Regulations guidance, and structural engineers typically consider both the everyday loads a surface will see and appropriate margins on top of that. Framed, Frameless and Custom Shapes

A framed cover uses a supporting surround – often a steel or stainless steel frame – that carries the glass and gives a defined edge, which can suit outdoor and heavier-duty settings. Lighting integrates differently depending on that choice. With a framed cover there is often scope to conceal fittings within or beneath the surround; with a frameless design the lighting is usually built into the well or the surrounding structure instead. Neither approach is inherently better – it comes down to the shape of the opening, the look you want and the practicalities of access and maintenance.
